Grain Consumption in Mexico Rises Amid Increased Production

In the 2025/26 marketing year, grain consumption in Mexico continues to rise, driven by the country’s growing population and increased production of calves, pigs, and poultry. According to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, corn production in Mexico is expected to increase by 3% year-on-year, reaching 24.5 million tons.

Local prices for white corn are anticipated to rise due to reduced stocks, which in turn stimulates the expansion of planted areas. After two years of drought and improved prices, farmers are optimistic about the upcoming harvest.
Changes in Imports and Production
Corn imports, the vast majority of which come from the U.S., may decrease by 3% to 24.8 million tons, thanks to the growth in domestic production and increased carryover stocks. However, it should be noted that production remains 10% lower than the average over the past ten years due to financial constraints, high levels of farmer debt, and increased risk levels in the country.
Wheat production in 2025/26 is projected to decline by 39% to 1.6 million tons, attributed to prolonged drought and low reservoir levels. Planted areas may decrease by 38% to 290,000 hectares, leading to an estimated 8% increase in wheat imports to 6.5 million tons, as domestic production is unable to meet demand.
Prospects for Other Grains
Regarding other grains, rice production is forecasted to rise by 4% to 170,000 tons due to government support. Rice imports are expected to increase by 1% to 880,000 tons due to rising consumption. Sorghum production will also rise by 3% to 3.9 million tons, while its imports will decrease to 30,000 tons due to high prices in the global market.
The further development of the grain and oilseed market in Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be discussed at the 23rd International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN.KYIV, which will take place on April 24 in Kyiv.
