Prolonged heavy rains affecting nearly all of France have led to a noticeable deterioration in the condition of winter crops and localized flooding, particularly in the western regions of the country. According to estimates from FranceAgriMer, the adverse weather conditions of recent days have negatively impacted the development of winter crops, reducing the proportion of crops that are in good and excellent condition.

February May Become the Wettest in Over 65 Years

According to Meteo France, this February could become the wettest in France since 1959. This presents additional challenges for the agricultural sector and complicates fieldwork. As of February 23, 84% of soft wheat crops were rated as good or excellent, which is 4% lower than the previous week, but still above last year’s level (72%).

Condition of Other Winter Crops and Delays in Spring Planting

Indicators for winter barley show a similar trend: 81% of crops are in good or excellent condition, compared to 84% a week ago and 69% in 2025. Durum wheat also experienced a slight decline — 81% of the area is rated as good or very good, which is nearly in line with last year’s situation.

Due to excessive rainfall, farmers are forced to nearly halt the planting of spring crops in most regions. Specifically, only 32% of the area for spring barley has been sown so far, significantly lower than the five-year average (44%). This raises concerns about the timing and volume of the spring planting campaign.

As of February 23, 84% of soft wheat crops were rated as good or excellent, down from 88% a week earlier, but better than last year’s figure (72%).
