Plans for Expansion and Creation of an Onion Cluster

The head of the board of the NGO “All-Ukrainian Council of Women Farmers” Lyudmyla Klebanova reported that by 2025, the area under this variety is planned to be increased to 150–250 hectares. In the long term, there are plans to create a specialized cluster for onion cultivation over an area of 1000 hectares, attracting investments of $10 million. The expected return from this initiative is $45 million. Additionally, the construction of a modern onion processing plant is planned, requiring another $36 million in investments.

Features of Cultivation and Advantages of the Korea-3 Variety

The farm manager Vitaliy Bilan emphasized that Korea-3 is a variety that has already shown frost resistance during trials in northern Moldova. Unlike many modern hybrids, Korea-3 does not bolt, which usually reduces the quality of the harvest and profitability. Biopreparations based on Trichoderma were used for planting, which helps in forming the necessary amount of foliage before winter arrives.

“We are interested in testing hybrids with high potential. Winter onions are a fresh product that can replace ‘Yalta’ red onions,” added the farmer.

Growing winter onions of the Korea-3 variety is advantageous in the Odesa region, as the spring climate is similar to that of South Korea, which facilitates the acclimatization of the variety. Harvesting is planned to begin as early as June, depending on market conditions.
