Growing lettuce on a windowsill in winter is becoming an increasingly popular way to ensure a supply of fresh greens during the cold season. This approach allows you to have a source of vitamins right at home.

Choosing the Variety and Preparing the Soil

For cultivating lettuce indoors, leafy varieties are best suited, as they are easier to grow in limited conditions. When selecting a container, it is not recommended to use deep pots. An optimal choice would be trays with a depth of up to 15 cm with cells. A drainage layer of small stones, gravel, or expanded clay should be placed at the bottom of the container. For growing lettuce, it is advisable to use peat enriched with micronutrient fertilizers or soil made from compost and sand.

It is also possible to grow in sturdy polyethylene bags, which should be cut to the desired size, placed in a tray, and filled with moist soil. To allow excess moisture to escape, the bags must be perforated at the bottom.

Sowing, Care, and Harvesting

Before sowing, the soil should be well moistened, and the lettuce seeds should be planted at a depth of no more than 0.5 cm, after which the top layer of soil is leveled. The trays are covered with a bag and placed in a dark, warm place for germination. It is important not to sow the seeds too densely; otherwise, the leaves will quickly bolt.

“When the first sprouts appear, the bag should be removed, and the container moved to the windowsill. The greens will grow actively with sufficient light and warmth. The light period should also be increased. The plant should be under light for about 14 hours. Therefore, additional lighting for the plants is necessary during winter evenings.”

Lettuce requires regular watering and misting, as indoor air is often too dry in winter due to heating. The first harvest can be gathered just a month after sowing, when the leaves reach a height of six centimeters. For subsequent harvests, it is recommended to cut the leaves and fertilize the roots with urea – this allows for up to two additional harvests in a season.
