Radishes are traditionally considered the first spring vegetable that appears on our table as early as April. However, it is possible to harvest fresh radishes much earlier, even in winter, if you grow them indoors.

Preparing the Container and Soil for Sowing Radishes

To grow radishes in winter, it is essential to properly prepare the planting container. It is recommended to choose a container that is 15–20 cm deep with drainage holes. A layer of expanded clay or small gravel should be placed at the bottom of the container for drainage, and then topped with peat, sand, or regular garden soil.

Before sowing the seeds, it is advisable to soak them in water for 20 minutes. The planting holes should be shallow—up to 1 cm deep. The soaked seeds are spaced about 4 cm apart, covered with soil, lightly pressed down, and moistened with settled water using a spray bottle. It is not recommended to water with a watering can, as this may wash the seeds out of the soil. Next, cover the container with plastic wrap or glass and place it in a warm location with a temperature of 18–20 °C.

Caring for Seedlings and Conditions for a Good Harvest

The first sprouts appear just 3–4 days after sowing. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the cover and move the container to a well-lit area. For proper radish development, a daylight duration of 10–12 hours is needed, so additional lighting with a grow light should be organized in winter.

The optimal temperature for growing radishes is 15–18 degrees. If the temperature rises to 22 degrees, the plants may start to bolt, which negatively affects the yield. It is also important to keep the soil slightly moist, as drying out can lead to bitterness in the roots. After each watering, it is recommended to gently loosen the soil.

“Ten days after the seedlings appear, fertilize the radishes with liquid mineral fertilizer and repeat the fertilization again after a week. With this care, you can harvest the first crop and prepare a salad with fresh, juicy radishes in just 30-40 days after sowing.”

By following these tips, you can enjoy your home-grown radishes even in the winter months by February.
