How Hydrogen Peroxide Helps Accelerate Vegetable Seed Germination

To ensure quick and healthy seed germination before sowing, many experienced gardeners use regular 3% hydrogen peroxide from the pharmacy. This affordable solution helps disinfect seeds, activates their growth, and strengthens the plants’ natural immunity. Thanks to this treatment, seedlings emerge significantly faster, and the future plants become more resistant to diseases.

Which Crops Are Suitable for Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment

Hydrogen peroxide gently softens the seed coat, promoting faster germination. For example, after treating tomato seeds, the germination rate can reach 90%, while for corn, it can be as high as 95%. The following crops are recommended for treatment: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, cabbage, pumpkin, eggplants, carrots, dill, parsley, and celery. However, it is important to remember that coated and hybrid seeds should not be soaked.

Instructions for Using Hydrogen Peroxide for Seed Soaking

  • Standard method: soak the seeds in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 15-20 minutes, then thoroughly rinse with clean water and dry.
  • For regular seeds: dilute 1 tablespoon of peroxide in 0.5 liters of water, and leave the seeds in the solution for 12 hours, changing the liquid every 4 hours.
  • For slow-germinating seeds (e.g., carrots, dill): soak in the same solution for 24 hours, replacing the liquid every 4 hours.
  • For dill, parsley, and fennel: use undiluted peroxide, soaking for 30 minutes, then rinse and dry.

Use non-metal containers to avoid a reaction between the peroxide and metal. Be sure to rinse the seeds after soaking.
