How Small Farmers Can Earn Up to 240,000 UAH Per Hectare in Seed Production
Small farms in Ukraine can achieve significantly higher profits by shifting from traditional sunflower cultivation to seed production. This was stated by NAAS Academician Vladislav Cherchel during a webinar of the All-Ukrainian Farmers’ Congress, providing a striking example: while sunflower cultivation typically yields 50,000 to 60,000 UAH per hectare, growing corn seed on the same area can bring in up to 240,000 UAH.

Calculations and Features of Seed Production
According to the expert, even at a minimum price of 2,000 UAH per seed unit, with at least 120 units obtainable per hectare, the profit reaches 240,000 UAH. Cherchel emphasizes that even if half of this amount is spent on seed processing, the farmer will still net 120,000 UAH per hectare, which significantly exceeds earnings from sunflowers.
“Where farmers can earn is in seed production. Producing any type of seed is better than just trading grain,” asserts Vladislav Cherchel.
However, achieving such results requires a completely different approach than conventional commodity production. Seed production demands specialized knowledge, attention to detail, modern technical equipment, and quality product processing. Cherchel stresses that small farmers, who manage smaller plots of land, have the potential to achieve high income if they choose this direction.
Legality and Ukrainian Hybrids
The scientist emphasizes the necessity of engaging exclusively in legal seed production. Recently, many seeds have appeared on the market that were grown without licenses and certification, posing risks for agribusiness and consumers. Legal seed production guarantees quality and protects both the producer and their clients.
Cherchel also notes the competitiveness of domestic corn hybrids. According to him, Ukrainian breeding developments are on par with foreign ones, and sometimes even surpass them, as they are created with local climatic conditions in mind, especially stress and drought conditions.
“I believe that our corn hybrids are not inferior to foreign ones, and in certain situations, they may even be better, considering that they are developed here in Ukraine and adapted to these conditions, to stress and drought,” asserts Vladislav Cherchel.
Recommendations for Farmers Planning to Start Seed Production
- Consult with specialized professionals
- Start with small areas to master the technology
- Ensure to obtain all necessary licenses and certificates
- Invest in modern processing equipment
- Find reliable partners for seed sales
Experts are confident that seed production is one of the most promising directions for small farms, capable of ensuring profitability several times higher than traditional crop cultivation. The main conditions for success remain a professional approach and adherence to legal requirements.
