How Ukrainians Can Legally Save on Electricity Bills

Paying for electricity in Ukraine can be significantly cheaper by using dual-tariff meters – this allows for savings of over 430 UAH per month without breaking the law. It is enough to contact the electricity supplier and install a modern “day-night” meter, which divides the day into two accounting modes.

How the “Day-Night” Dual-Tariff Meter Works
This type of meter automatically switches between two tariffs depending on the time of day. The night period lasts from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, during which electricity is charged at a rate that is half of the daytime rate. With the current rate of 4.32 UAH/kWh, the night rate will be 2.16 UAH/kWh.
Saving Example for a Family of Three
For example, let’s consider a family of three residents who have an electric stove and a boiler in their apartment and consume 300 kWh of electricity per month. Without a dual-tariff meter, this entire amount is charged at the standard rate of 4.32 UAH/kWh, totaling 1296 UAH per month.
If the family uses most of their electricity at night, for instance, for the boiler and other appliances, then 200 kWh can be charged at the night rate – 2.16 UAH/kWh. This will allow them to pay only 432 UAH for night electricity and the same amount for daytime usage, resulting in a total of 864 UAH. Thus, the monthly savings can exceed 430 UAH.
However, it is important to consider that the tariff may change, and accordingly, the amount of saved funds may also vary.
