The import of corn from the USA could be a key factor in the further growth of Thailand’s poultry industry. Representatives of Thaifoods Group believe that with the arrival of quality and cheaper raw materials, the country will not only be able to reduce production costs but also strengthen its competitive advantages in the international poultry meat market.

Reduction of Feed Costs and Market Impact

Thaifoods Group’s Chief Operating Officer, Fet Nantawichai, noted that the supply of American corn will reduce feed production costs, which are a major expense in the industry. According to him, this import will provide Thai producers access to raw materials that are not only cheaper than local ones but also of higher quality. This is particularly important in light of competition from Vietnam, where the price of corn is $0.03–$0.05 per kilogram lower than in Thailand. It is expected that the cost of corn for the country’s poultry enterprises will decrease to approximately $0.28 per kilogram compared to the current $0.29–$0.30 per kilogram.

“Thai processors can produce and supply products that meet customer preferences.”

Industry Competitiveness and Export Prospects

Fet Nantawichai emphasized that currently, Thailand’s production costs are 20–30% higher than those in the largest chicken-exporting countries—Brazil, the USA, and EU states. At the same time, Thailand manages to maintain high competitiveness due to its excellent reputation for quality, safety, and taste properties of its products. Reducing costs for feed ingredients will help retain existing customers and open new markets where consumers are focused on price accessibility.

Currently, Thailand and the USA are actively negotiating mutual tariffs and trade conditions, particularly regarding the import of American corn and soybean meal. It is expected that the Thai government plans to finalize the relevant agreement by the end of this year, and the first shipments of corn from the USA could begin as early as mid-2026.
