The European Union has implemented new rules regarding the sale of bananas, requiring retailers to indicate the country of origin of these fruits. This initiative aims to provide consumers with essential information about the origin of products.

This is reported by AgroReview

According to EU Regulation 2023/2429, starting from January 1, 2025, retailers are obligated to provide information about the country of origin of fresh bananas sold at the retail level. Consumers have the right to know where the products they purchase come from.

Key Labeling Requirements

The new rules apply to both packaged and unpackaged bananas. Fruits sold by weight must also have labeling that includes not only the country of origin but also information about the variety, net weight, batch number, and the address of the business.

Ban on Misleading Labeling

The document introduces a ban on the use of words and phrases on packaging that may imply a higher quality of products. This is an important step aimed at ensuring transparency and accuracy of the information provided to consumers. As a result, customers will be able to decide for themselves which bananas from which countries they wish to purchase.
