Iraq has delivered 220,000 tons of wheat to Syria: the first batch has already arrived

Syrian media reported on Friday, April 25, 2025, that Iraq sent 220,000 tons of wheat to Syria as a “gift.” This was stated by the director of the Syrian Grain Organization, who added that the first batch has already arrived in the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor.

Earlier, on March 25, Syria purchased about 100,000 tons of wheat as part of a preliminary tender, which is considered the first major procurement tender since the change of government in the country at the end of last year.
Import issues due to sanctions and blockades
Syrian officials from the new government administration, led by Islamists, note that while the import of wheat and other staple food products is not subject to U.S. and UN sanctions, difficulties in financing trade agreements are preventing global suppliers from making sales to the country.
Loss of Russian and Iranian supplies
Russia and Iran, which were previously the main suppliers of wheat and petroleum products to Syria during the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad, halted supplies after the rebels gained victory, and Assad, who was ousted from power in December 2024, fled to Moscow.
Last Sunday, the Syrian government reported the arrival of a ship with wheat at the port of Latakia — the first such delivery since Assad was ousted by the rebels.
