Kherson Region Plans to Double Areas for Vegetables and Melons in 2025

In 2025, a significant increase in the areas allocated for the cultivation of vegetables and melons is planned in the Kherson region. This decision has become possible due to the successful demining of agricultural lands and the partial restoration of the irrigation system in the right bank of the region.

“Today, over 80% of agricultural lands have been cleared of mines. Potentially, another 100,000 hectares remain mined. Additionally, the restoration of irrigation was a priority task last year and this year. We have restored it over an area of 3,000 hectares. As a result, we will nearly double the total area of vegetable and melon crops this year to 10,000 hectares. Specifically, we plan to sow 1,500 hectares of watermelons and 400 hectares of melons,” noted Dmitry Yunusov, head of the agricultural department of the Kherson Regional State Administration.
For comparison, before the start of the Russian invasion, in 2021, the area allocated for vegetables and melons in the Kherson region was 22,500 hectares. It is noted that the yield of watermelons in 2021, thanks to irrigation, was over 20 tons per hectare. Forecasts for 2025 indicate a possible yield of 10 tons per hectare for watermelons. Prices for melon crops are expected to remain at a level similar to last year’s.
