In Ukraine, the cultivation of miscanthus is actively developing, becoming popular not only as an energy crop but also as an effective natural protective barrier for the cultivation of grains, vegetables, and fruit crops.

Advantages of Using Miscanthus for Field Protection

Miscanthus forms dense and tall thickets that can reach heights of three meters. Thanks to these properties, the plant reliably protects fields from the negative effects of wind, dust, and soil erosion. Unlike traditional windbreaks, creating a protective strip with miscanthus does not require significant land allocation — it can be planted along roads, on the edges of fields, or canals.

Farmers note that the use of so-called “green walls” helps retain moisture in the soil and reduces the risk of damage to young plants from gusts of wind.

Contribution to the Environment and Farm Economy

In addition to its protective functions, miscanthus positively impacts the environment: the plant actively absorbs carbon dioxide and develops a strong root system that improves soil structure. For this reason, miscanthus is increasingly being considered an important element of sustainable agriculture.

From an economic perspective, cultivating miscanthus is also beneficial. A few years after planting, the stems of the plant can be used as raw material for producing biofuels: pellets and briquettes. Thus, protective strips of miscanthus not only preserve crops but also bring additional income to agricultural enterprises.

“Miscanthus is a crop that works in the field all year round: it protects, retains moisture, and even generates energy,” say agro-experts.
