A National Network of Vegetable Storage Facilities Will Be Established in Ukraine

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy is initiating the creation of a national network of vegetable storage facilities to reduce crop losses, which currently reach about 35% due to the lack of modern storage. A significant portion of the storage facilities has been destroyed as a result of military actions, leading to a loss of over 281,000 tons of simultaneous storage capacity. Currently, the deficit of storage capacity for vegetables exceeds 1.1 million tons.

The Importance of a Modern Network of Vegetable Storage Facilities

Vegetable storage facilities are not just warehouses. They provide the opportunity to store crops until the optimal moment for sale, allowing for better prices for the products. These facilities also serve as a tool to curb inflationary processes, support local farmers, create new jobs, and contribute to budget revenues through tax income. In addition, the development of the network of vegetable storage facilities is a step towards import substitution and stimulates the export of value-added products.

Transition to an Agro-Industrial Model

“We are moving towards an agro-industrial country model, where it is not raw materials but processed products that create economic value. For comparison: 1 hectare of land in Ukraine brings in an average of €1,000 in export revenue, while in Denmark, for example, it is €15,000. Our task is to reduce this gap,” emphasized Minister of Agrarian Policy Vitaliy Koval.

The development of modern vegetable storage infrastructure will not only allow for the preservation of a larger portion of the harvest but also enhance the competitiveness of Ukrainian agricultural products in both domestic and foreign markets. This will be an important step in transforming the agricultural sector into a high value-added industry.
