Ukrainian farmers are currently forced to urgently sell their onion stocks due to a sharp decline in market prices. Over the past week, prices have dropped by 15%, a consequence of unfavorable weather conditions during the harvest.

As of mid-November 2025, producers are offering onions at prices ranging from 4 to 9 hryvnias per kilogram. This wide price range is due to the quality of the product and the size of the batches. The cheapest onions are those not intended for long-term storage and need to be sold quickly.

Impact of Rain on Harvest and Quality

This year, Ukrainian farmers faced a significant increase in the share of substandard onions — it has doubled compared to last year. The reason was prolonged rains during the harvest, which led to the vegetables becoming wet and a substantial deterioration in their quality. As a result, such products are unsuitable for storage and spoil quickly.

“Farmers candidly say: the share of substandard onions this year is twice as high as last year. Prolonged rains during the harvest took their toll. The vegetables got wet, the quality suffered, and this means one thing — such onions are not suitable for long-term storage.”

Storing such products in warehouses is risky — farmers could lose everything. Therefore, they are lowering prices and trying to sell substandard goods as quickly as possible.

Quality Differences and Pricing Policy

Market analysts emphasize that currently, quality onions are virtually absent from the market. Those farmers who managed to harvest a good crop are keeping it in storage, waiting for prices to rise. This is due to their unwillingness to sell quality products at the low prices typical for substandard goods.

The market is dominated by medium and low-quality onions, the supply of which is constantly increasing, further putting pressure on prices. Experts suggest that the decline in prices may continue in the coming days.

Comparison with Last Year and Prospects

The current price of onions in Ukraine is 42% lower than in November last year — this is practically half. For consumers, this trend is beneficial, but for farmers, it creates serious problems.

Key market participants predict that the price decline will continue until all substandard products are sold. Price stabilization is only possible after that. Farmers are faced with a difficult choice: sell at a low price now or risk losing even more by waiting for market improvement.

Note: According to experts, the share of domestic greenhouse vegetables in Ukraine during winter is only about 10%. The majority of products on the market are imports or vegetables from open fields that have been preserved from the summer-autumn season.
