Onion Market Situation: Prices and Influencing Factors

As of December 7, Ukrainian producers are selling onions within the range of 3–8 UAH/kg ($0.07–$0.19 per kilogram). This is approximately 22% cheaper than at the end of the previous week. Experts explain this price drop by the significant increase in the volumes of medium and low-quality onions currently entering the market.

Impact of Weather Conditions on Harvest Quality

“Due to prolonged rains during the harvesting period, the quality of the harvest has been significantly affected, resulting in products being unsuitable for long-term storage. In an effort to sell such onions as quickly as possible, farmers have repeatedly reported lowering their selling prices. Meanwhile, high-quality products are rarely available for sale now, as farmers prefer to keep them in storage, waiting for higher prices,” analysts note.

A significant portion of the onions offered by Ukrainian farmers is unsuitable for long-term storage due to deteriorated quality caused by unfavorable weather conditions during the harvest. As a result, farmers are forced to sell vegetables at minimal prices to avoid substantial losses.

At the same time, high-quality onions remain in short supply on the market. Producers are postponing their sale in anticipation of possible price increases in the future. Currently, the average price of onions in Ukraine is already 68% lower than it was at the beginning of December 2024.
