Prices of Beets and Onions in Ukraine are Rapidly Rising Due to Shortage

In Ukraine, there is a constant increase in prices for the most popular vegetables — beets and onions. According to analysts, the prices for table beets have already doubled compared to last year, while onion prices are 59% higher.

Price Increase for Beets Due to Production Cuts

Experts say that wholesale prices for beets in the country range from 20 to 26 hryvnias per kilogram, which is 17% higher compared to the end of last week. This is also twice as much as during the same period last year.

“Such high prices are attributed by market players to a significant reduction in the production of table beets in Ukraine this season, primarily due to unfavorable weather conditions in the summer of 2024. As a result, most farmers have already completed their selling season, and stocks in storage are nearly exhausted.”

Reports indicate that farmers’ activities are declining due to adverse climatic conditions, leading to reduced harvests. Consequently, vegetable stocks on farms are decreasing rapidly. Further price increases are anticipated, as demand remains high and the number of requests for wholesale purchases is increasing daily.

Price Increase for Onions and Their Shortage

In addition to beets, the pricing situation has also significantly worsened for onions. Ukraine is running out of this vegetable, yet wholesale companies are actively purchasing it. As a result, the price of onions has risen to 14-20 hryvnias per kilogram — 55% higher than at the end of last week, and 59% higher than during the same period last year.

Experts note that the demand for onions is increasing daily, as there is a sharp shortage of quality products. Most farms have already sold their stocks, and those that still have leftovers have halted sales, contributing to a frenzy among buyers and further price increases.
