In Ukraine, there has been a significant increase in prices for greenhouse tomatoes, which is a result of a noticeable reduction in supply in the market. By the end of this week, tomatoes from greenhouses are being sold at prices ranging from 50 to 60 hryvnias per kilogram, which is on average 51% more expensive than a week ago.

Reasons for the Price Increase in the Tomato Market

Producers note that the main reason for the price hike is the decrease in tomato harvest volumes in greenhouses due to the cool weather that has affected the entire territory of Ukraine. Small farmers have nearly completed their sales and are offering remaining products only in small wholesale quantities. The quality of the vegetables in many cases leaves much to be desired, and production facilities are also forced to release vegetables in small batches.

“This week, representatives of greenhouse facilities began to raise the wholesale prices for batches of tomatoes. The increase in the price of the vegetable was caused by a significant reduction in its supply in the market, against the backdrop of maintaining quite high demand.”

Price Situation in Supermarkets

A noticeable price increase is also evident in the country’s retail chains. In the Novus supermarket, a kilogram of tomatoes can be purchased for 49.99 hryvnias. In the Silpo chain, the price for Ukrainian tomatoes is 63.2 hryvnias per kilogram, while in ATB, greenhouse tomatoes are sold for 65.89 hryvnias per kilogram.

Despite the significant price increase, the demand for tomatoes remains high, so producers forecast further price growth for the next week. At the same time, even after the recent changes, the average price of tomatoes in Ukraine is 20% lower than in October of last year.
