In Ukraine, a decrease in prices for last year’s potatoes has been recorded, despite the near depletion of their stocks in agricultural storage facilities. This week, producers are forced to lower the prices of remaining stocks due to the deterioration in product quality and weak market demand.

Reasons for the Price Drop and Price Dynamics

According to market participants, the quality of last year’s potatoes is rapidly declining during storage, which has led to further price drops. Currently, farmers in most regions are selling last year’s potato harvest for 15-24 UAH/kg (equivalent to $0.36-0.58/kg). This is approximately 12% cheaper than at the end of the previous working week.

The decrease in demand has become a key factor influencing price formation. Experts indicate that both wholesale companies and retail chains are reducing purchases due to the prevalence of low-quality products in the market, while quality potatoes in Ukrainian farms are almost non-existent.

Comparison to Last Year’s Prices

Despite the downward price trend, the price of potatoes in Ukraine today is on average 25% higher than during the same period last year.
