Prices for Sunflower and Sunflower Oil in Ukraine Rise Due to Raw Material Shortage

The Ukrainian sunflower market is experiencing a steady increase in prices, despite complications during the harvesting campaign. Heavy rains and excess moisture significantly slow down the harvest pace, negatively affecting seed quality and reducing the share of grade A product. As a result, demand for sunflower remains high, and prices continue to rise.

Harvesting Pace and Price Dynamics

According to analysts, approximately 6.3 million tons of sunflower have been harvested so far, which is only half of the planned 11.5–12 million tons. The supply in the market is limited, as most agricultural producers have already sold their main volumes, and processing plants are forced to actively search for quality raw materials. This intensifies competition among processors and stimulates further increases in purchase prices.

“The sunflower harvest is progressing slowly. In the last week, the harvest increased by less than 1 million tons, and the total volume is about 6.3 million tons — only half of the planned 11.5–12 million tons. Due to excess moisture, seed quality is deteriorating, and the share of grade A product is decreasing. This stimulates price growth in the market,” analysts note.

Currently, the average price for sunflower with an oil content of 48% ranges from 27,100 to 27,500 UAH/ton. By the end of October, experts predict the price will rise to 27,500–28,000 UAH/ton. It is expected that demand will remain high at least until the beginning of November, and in the second half of autumn, further increases to 29,000–30,500 UAH/ton are possible.

Situation in the Sunflower Oil Market

The sunflower oil market is also showing an upward trend. As of mid-October, oil exports reached 146,000 tons, indicating a revival in trading activity. In the last week, exchange quotations increased by $35–50 per ton in both the European and domestic markets. The reasons for this are attributed to the raw material shortage in European Union countries and consistently high demand for Ukrainian products domestically, allowing exporters to strengthen their positions.
