Dynamics of Railway Transportation and Grain Exports

In the first two months of 2026, the total volume of grain transported by rail amounted to 5,419.8 thousand tons. This is 571.3 thousand tons (9.5%) less than in the corresponding period last year. Grain exports for the first ten days of March reached 928.2 thousand tons, which is 81.5 thousand tons (10%) higher than the figures for February 2026. Compared to March 2025, export shipments increased by 68 thousand tons, or 8%.

Increase in the Cost of the Sowing Campaign

The cost of this year’s sowing campaign for domestic farmers will significantly increase. According to Denis Marchuk, Deputy Head of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, the expenses for this year’s sowing will amount to about 700 billion UAH (17 billion USD), which is approximately 15% more than last year.

“The difficulties arising are that this season’s sowing campaign will be more expensive. In total, it will cost Ukrainian producers around 700 billion UAH for these works. Accordingly, this will reflect in the final prices of food products,” the expert stated.

Thus, the increase in the volume of railway grain transportation affects both Ukraine’s export capabilities and the economic challenges for the agricultural sector amid rising costs for the sowing campaign.
