Reasons for the Disappearance of Small Dairy Farms in Ukraine

Maintaining small dairy farms is becoming an increasingly challenging task, as farmers are forced to either close their businesses or increase their herd sizes to maintain their share of the dairy market.

This was reported in an exclusive interview by Mykola Demchak, the director of the company “Siy Dobro”.

“There is a trend towards the consolidation of enterprises. Previously, for example, there were farms with 300-400 dairy cows. There will be fewer and fewer of them. They will either move towards zero or to a thousand heads. This is related to many factors, primarily profitability,” noted Mykola Demchak.

In Demchak’s opinion, small enterprises find it difficult to compete with larger market players due to the high cost of milk production. However, they have the opportunity to produce niche products, such as cheeses, capturing a specific segment of the market.
