Romania, one of the leading grain producers in the European Union, expects a record wheat harvest in 2025. According to analysts and the Ministry of Agriculture, a significant amount of spring rainfall has contributed to the recovery of the country’s agricultural sector following last year’s drought.

Spring Rains Helped Farmers Recover from Drought

In 2024, prolonged drought and high temperatures negatively impacted the yields of wheat, corn, and sunflower not only in Romania but also in many other parts of Europe. However, regular rainfall in April and May 2025 significantly improved soil conditions, creating more favorable circumstances for crop development.

Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu noted that this season the country could harvest between 14 and 15 million metric tons of wheat. Meanwhile, AGRIColumn analyst Cezar George forecasts a harvest of 13-13.3 million tons. Even this figure would set a historical record, surpassing the 2021 peak.

“The additional surplus of Romanian wheat will partially compensate for the wheat deficit… which may put pressure on prices to decrease,” George said.

Exports and Prospects for Other Crops

According to the national statistical office, in 2024 Romania harvested 9.29 million tons of wheat, which is a 3.5% decrease compared to 2023. The corn harvest amounted to 5.99 million tons (down 31.45%), while sunflower production fell by 26.04% to 1.49 million tons. However, production is expected to rise in 2025: for corn, up to 10.2 million tons, and for sunflowers, up to 2.5-2.6 million tons, although farmers remain cautious about these crops due to drought risks.

Romania is actively exporting grain through the port of Constanta on the Black Sea, which has become a key transit route for Ukrainian products since the onset of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine. Since February 2022, approximately 30 million tons of Ukrainian grain have been shipped through the Romanian port. Specifically, in the first four months of 2025, Ukraine exported 292,233 tons of grain from the port of Constanta.
