Last week, the wheat market in Romania remained in a wait-and-see mode as traders closely monitored the developments in the Middle East and the possibility of a ceasefire. Trading activity decreased due to preparations for the Orthodox Easter celebration, which traditionally involves a lower volume of operations in the grain market in the Black Sea region.

Record Export Volume and New Markets

According to Eurostat, from July to January of the 2025/26 marketing year, Romania’s wheat exports reached a record level for this season. Export volumes exceeded the five-year average by 2 million tons, indicating Romania’s growing role in the global grain market.

Demand for Romanian wheat from Saudi Arabia has significantly increased, with the country doubling its purchases compared to previous years. This nation is actively diversifying its grain supply sources. At the same time, Romania has every chance of finishing the season with record wheat export volumes.

Changing Buyer Structure and Price Volatility

Despite the overall increase in wheat demand, Egypt continues to reduce its purchases from Romania. Currently, Ukraine and Russia are the main suppliers for the Egyptian market. This has affected the redistribution of market shares among Black Sea countries.

Last week, prices in the forward wheat market in Romania were characterized by increased volatility. This was due to low business activity during the holiday period and the caution of traders who are awaiting further developments in the geopolitical situation.

“Last week, the old crop wheat market was in anticipation of further developments in the Middle East and the possibility of a ceasefire. Traders took a pause to observe the market situation, while the trading community in the Black Sea region prepared for the Orthodox Easter celebration and the corresponding decrease in trading activity.”
