Secrets of Effective Potato Storage: Tips for Farmers

Storing potatoes may seem like a simple task, but farmers know well that keeping the harvest in excellent condition until spring requires significant effort. The “Adelaide” farm from the village of Tupaltzy in the Zhytomyr region shares practical advice on minimizing losses during long-term potato storage.

The Importance of Ventilation and Temperature Control

The main issue with long-term potato storage is the respiration of the tubers and the moisture they release. If potatoes are stored without proper ventilation, they quickly heat up, leading to rot. Representatives of the farm emphasize the necessity of forced ventilation, which helps maintain a stable temperature and remove excess carbon dioxide that negatively affects the vegetables.

Correct temperature control is equally important: even a slight error of a few degrees can spoil a significant portion of the harvest. After being placed in storage, potatoes must undergo a curing phase to heal minor damages. Only after this phase is the temperature gradually lowered to the optimal level. This approach helps avoid premature sprouting and loss of tuber quality.

Humidity Control and Investment in Modern Equipment

Another important factor is maintaining the right humidity in the storage facility. Air that is too dry leads to wilting of the potatoes, while excessive humidity promotes the development of fungal diseases. Experts recommend using automated monitoring systems that respond to changes in weather conditions, which is particularly relevant for unpredictable winters with frequent thaws and frosts.

A modern potato storage facility is a complex system with precise microclimate control. Investments in ventilation and cooling equipment quickly pay off, as they help maintain the weight and quality of the produce. The experience of Ukrainian farmers confirms that even in challenging conditions, high storage standards equivalent to European ones can be achieved.

“The main problem with long-term storage is the respiration of the tubers and the release of moisture. If you simply pile the potatoes together, they will quickly start to heat up, leading to mass rot. The farm emphasizes that it is critically important to ensure forced ventilation. It is the movement of air that allows for stable temperature maintenance and the removal of excess carbon dioxide, which literally suffocates the vegetables.”
