Spring Weather Conditions in Romania Favor Corn and Sunflower Planting

In Romania, the condition of winter crops is improving due to the favorable spring weather of 2025, which significantly exceeds last year’s figures. Precipitation has been higher than the average over the past 4-5 years, although in some regions, particularly in Oltenia, Giurgiu, and Teleorman, crops are developing poorly due to insufficient moisture.

Despite temperatures exceeding zero on some days, allowing plants to emerge from winter dormancy, the risks of frost down to -10…-15°C without snow cover still remain. Farmers are actively preparing for the planting of corn and sunflowers at this time.
Temperature and Precipitation Forecasts
According to forecasts from the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), temperatures will soon begin to gradually rise, and by next week, they may reach +25°C, opening the possibility for the start of planting. Expected rains after March 24 are anticipated to improve conditions for the germination of spring crops, especially in the southern and southwestern regions, where the soil requires additional moisture.
Farmers’ Expectations
Following the forecasted positive precipitation, some farmers have expressed their intention to focus on corn planting due to high domestic demand and limited stocks of quality products in the country. As a result, the final area for corn and sunflower planting may exceed the initial forecasts of the Ministry of Agriculture, depending on the amount of rainfall in March and April.
