Strawberry Shortage and Price Increase: Forecast for May 2025

The President of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation, Leonid Kozachenko, announced that a shortage of strawberries is expected in the Ukrainian market in May 2025, due to unfavorable weather conditions this spring. The expert notes that as a result, the price of the berry will rise, and low prices during the season are not anticipated in the near future.

Main Reasons for the Strawberry Shortage

According to Leonid Kozachenko, the primary reason for the limited supply of strawberries is weather and climate factors. This spring, many regions experienced a lack of warmth and moisture deficiency, which farmers had hoped for more of. However, as the expert points out, it is difficult to cover the water shortage in the fields, as there are insufficient financial resources and necessary logistical supplies.

Impact of Weather Conditions on Prices

“The problem is not only that of the war — it is still about weather and climate conditions. There was not enough warmth; we were counting on more, but most importantly, there is a moisture deficit that we need to cover now. However, there are neither funds nor other necessary logistical resources available for this. And this will slightly reflect on the cost. That is, strawberries will be more expensive than last year,” the expert predicts.

Therefore, in the first half of May, there will be very few strawberries in the Ukrainian market, and the price of the berry will remain high. Consumers will have to wait for a decrease in price only after the stabilization of weather conditions and an increase in supply.
