Syria Releases New Banknotes Featuring Agricultural Symbols
At the beginning of 2026, Syria presented an updated series of banknotes featuring symbols of national agricultural identity. The new bills combine modern design with traditional motifs that reflect the historical diversity of the country’s agricultural crops. According to government officials, the symbols were chosen not only for their aesthetics but also considering the colors that correspond to the characteristics of each crop.

Agricultural Themes and the Role of the Agro-Sector
The banknotes feature images of various plants and animals characteristic of Syria. Agricultural experts emphasize that this reflects a growing awareness of the importance of agriculture for the country’s food security and economic stability.
A special place on the banknotes is reserved for wheat, which has become the central element of the largest denomination. Agricultural engineer Nibal Khazal highlights the strategic significance of this crop for ensuring food security and forming the basis of nutrition for Syrians. The depiction of cotton underscores its significant role in the development of the textile industry and the creation of jobs for the local population.
Unique Crops and Biodiversity on the Banknotes
The Damask rose, which also appears on the new currency, holds a special status. This plant is unique in the world for producing essential oil used in Eastern sweets and perfumery. Due to its special properties, it is cultivated in various countries, including Bulgaria. At the same time, the Damask rose is deeply rooted in Syria’s cultural heritage, included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage, and considered one of the symbols of national identity.
The banknotes also depict mulberries, known for their taste and yield, especially in the areas of Damascus and Quneitra, as well as olive trees, which symbolize peace, life, and a connection to the land. Citrus crops represent the resilience of farmers and support for local producers, particularly in the coastal regions of the country.
In addition to plants, the bills feature representatives of the animal kingdom — butterflies, gazelles, Arabian horses, swallows, and sparrows. This highlights the importance of livestock farming and biodiversity for the Syrian economy.
“The symbols on the new banknotes reflect the wealth of Syrian agriculture, its economic weight, and are a symbol of stability and the deep connection of our people to the land,” emphasized Agriculture Minister Amjad Badr.
He added that in creating the design of the banknotes, they opted against portraits or personal symbols, choosing motifs that emphasize equality and the collective contribution of all Syrians to the prosperity of the state.
