The Area for Watermelons and Melons in Kherson Region Has Increased by One and a Half Times

The sowing campaign for 2025 is actively underway in the Kherson region. Local farmers plan to sow about 250 thousand hectares of agricultural land, which is one and a half times more than last season. The increase in area has been made possible by the demining of agricultural lands.

Growth in Areas for Melon Crops
One of the noticeable trends in this year’s sowing is the expansion of areas for watermelons and melons. Currently, 150 hectares of melon crops have already been sown, and farmers plan to increase this figure to 2 thousand hectares. Sowing of spring grains and legumes is also actively ongoing — 19 thousand hectares have already been sown, along with potatoes, vegetables, and industrial crops.
Autumn Sowing and Farmers’ Resilience
During the last autumn campaign of 2024, over 110 thousand hectares of winter crops were sown in the region: wheat, barley, and rapeseed. Despite the challenging conditions and the consequences of the war, farmers continue to increase the volumes of agricultural production.
“Despite all the trials and hardships that Russia has brought to the land of Kherson, our farmers continue to tirelessly sow the fields of the Kherson region. And every year, the amount of land on which the best products are grown only increases,” emphasized Dmitry Butriy, the First Deputy Head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration.
