The Emergence of Beet Weevils in the Fields of Ukraine

In all beet-growing regions of Ukraine, there is a mass emergence of beet weevil beetles, particularly the common and gray varieties. According to the weekly report from the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, concentrations of 0.1 to 1 individual per square meter are observed in old beet fields in Kyiv, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions. This indicates the active onset of pest activity, which may negatively impact yields.

According to official information, farms in the Rivne region have reported slight damage of 2-5% to beet seedlings due to the activity of the gray beet weevil, with a population density of about 0.2 individuals per square meter. Experts urge farmers to be particularly vigilant and to implement necessary plant protection measures.
Detection and Control Measures Against Beet Pests
There is an active emergence and concentration of beet leaf beetles and shield bugs in the fields near road edges and in old beet fields, especially on lamb’s quarters weeds. This may facilitate the spread of pests in the upcoming periods.
Additionally, on primary host plants such as viburnum and jasmine, the revival and feeding of leaf beet aphid larvae continues. This may cause additional problems for future beet crops.
Experts recommend that farmers take timely measures to protect their crops, including the use of insecticides and other agronomic pest control methods to maintain high yields.
