The US Faces Storage Capacity Shortages Amid Record Harvest

The US Faces Storage Capacity Shortages Amid Record Harvest

This fall, the United States is expected to see a record harvest of grain crops – corn, soybeans, and sorghum. The total harvest volume could reach 21.5 billion bushels, equivalent to about 548 million tons. However, such high figures are putting significant pressure on grain storage infrastructure, as elevators and traders are facing a lack of available capacity, complicating effective logistics and harvest processing.

Storage Limitations and Rising Storage Costs

According to analysts from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange, this year, storage space for grains is extremely limited. As a result, grain traders are forced to raise storage fees, as the infrastructure is under significant strain, and the capacity of elevators is insufficient for the record harvest. The shortage of storage is particularly acute in the 12 leading corn-producing states.

“The challenge for elevators will be prioritizing the limited storage space for grain. The 12 leading corn-producing states in the US are facing a vertical storage deficit of 1.4 billion bushels (approximately 35.7 million tons) this year, as elevators increasingly rely on bins and emergency storage, such as ground piles. This year’s deficit sharply contrasts with last year when these states had a surplus of storage amounting to 361 million bushels (approximately 9.2 million tons),” said Tanner Emke, a grain and oilseed economist at CoBank.

Export Dynamics and Shifts in Storage Focus

Experts analyze that by 2025, American soybean exports will significantly lag behind past years: sales have dropped by 51%. In contrast, the rising demand for corn and wheat allows elevators to reallocate limited storage space specifically for these crops, helping to optimize storage use under challenging conditions.
