In February 2026, the Ukrainian grain market is experiencing a noticeable increase in barley prices, which has come into focus due to a rapid rise in value.

Not long ago, barley was overshadowed by wheat and corn; however, the current limited supply and increased export activity are forcing traders to raise purchase prices. The situation has changed due to a combination of internal and external factors affecting the market.

Main Reasons for the Rise in Barley Prices

The primary factor driving price increases is the shortage of quality grain in the domestic market. Many farmers, including those in Ternopil region, have reduced the area sown with barley, and unfavorable weather conditions during the winter have worsened the situation. This has led stockholders to hesitate in selling their grain, hoping for even more favorable conditions, which significantly heats up the market.

In addition to domestic reasons, there is also strong external demand. The port infrastructure, despite the state of war, is working to fulfill export contracts. Exporters are forced to compete for every volume of grain, offering more attractive prices—especially when purchasing large batches for delivery to terminals.

Particular attention should be paid to the fact that barley has become a true “scarce delicacy” for the livestock sector. Feed manufacturers and domestic processors are forced to raise prices to secure the raw materials actively purchased by exporters. This creates some tension, as the cost of livestock products directly depends on the price of the grain component.

Market Prospects in February and March

Analysts believe that the trend of rising prices will continue at least until the start of the mass spring sowing campaign. During this period, farmers are primarily focused on preparing equipment and purchasing fertilizers rather than on sales, which supports the supply shortage. At the same time, traders are trying to build up grain stocks in anticipation of possible further increases in logistics costs.

The rise in barley prices is both good news for filling the budgets of agricultural enterprises and a challenge for domestic consumers. The further situation will depend on the stability of the “grain corridor” and weather conditions, which will determine how successful the start of the new season will be for this strategically important crop.
