In the Ukrainian Grain Market, Corn Gradually Undercuts Wheat Prices

The Ukrainian grain market is experiencing an unusual situation: the price of food wheat is decreasing, while the price of corn is rising. According to traders from Spike Brokers, the current pricing situation is complicated by the fact that corn is trading at or even above the price of wheat, which is atypical for the country’s domestic market.

Strong demand from exporters and processing enterprises is supporting high corn prices, while the supply from agricultural producers is limited. They are holding back sales, anticipating even greater price increases. Additionally, a significant factor affecting the pricing situation is the limited amount of corn stocks in the country’s warehouses.
Increased Competition and the Import of GMO Corn
The Ukrainian corn market is also feeling pressure from increased competition. The European Union has allowed the import of GMO corn from the USA and Brazil. This opens new opportunities for suppliers and complicates the situation for local producers.
Brokers note that the balance between the old and new corn harvests has been disrupted. The price difference between them is approximately 34 US dollars.
Price Estimates for the 2024 and 2025 Harvests
According to the latest data, the prices for purchasing the 2024 harvest are as follows:
- Ukrainian Odessa — approximately 238-240 dollars per ton,
- Germany — about 220-225 euros per ton,
- The Netherlands — 220-223 euros per ton.
As for the 2025 harvest, the prices are:
- in Ukraine — approximately 204-206 dollars per ton,
- in Germany — about 203-205 euros per ton,
- in the Netherlands — 198-200 euros per ton.
This price distribution indicates a trend of decreasing corn prices in the coming year, which may impact Ukrainian agricultural producers and exporters.
