EU Tightens Certification Requirements for Ukrainian Honey: New Export Rules

Starting from February 2026, Ukrainian honey producers will face strengthened certification requirements introduced by the European Union. These changes significantly expand the list of indicators that laboratories will use to test beekeeping products, aimed at enhancing safety for consumers in EU countries.

Control Over Antibiotics and Pesticides

The updated rules place special emphasis on detecting residues of certain groups of antibiotics that were previously not subjected to such thorough monitoring. Thanks to modern laboratory equipment, European experts can detect even the smallest traces of banned substances at the nanoparticle level. This means that even accidental use of inappropriate veterinary drugs for treating bees could be grounds for blocking an entire batch of honey at the European border.

In addition to veterinary drugs, residues of pesticides used during the flowering of honey-bearing crops are also under special scrutiny. Experts urge Ukrainian beekeepers to collaborate more closely with farmers. The use of certain insecticides in rapeseed or sunflower fields could render honey unsuitable for export according to the new safety standards.

Digitalization and Cooperation — The Path to Preserving Exports

To maintain positions in the European market, industry experts recommend implementing digital passports for each batch of products. This approach ensures complete transparency in the supply chain — from the apiary to the processing facility. Transparency and traceability are becoming key arguments for cooperation with European importers.

At the same time, one of the biggest challenges for Ukrainian beekeepers remains the high cost of updated laboratory research. To optimize costs, specialists advise small and medium-sized producers to unite into cooperatives and create joint laboratory centers for initial quality control. This will allow for preliminary screening of honey before it is sent to export enterprises, reducing the risks of product returns and preventing reputational losses for the entire industry.
