The Ukrainian company “Hals Agro” has become a pioneer in the global market by producing sugar using biomethane for the first time and receiving the corresponding certificates that confirm the minimal carbon footprint of this product.

How the Innovative Biomethane Technology Works

The technological process involves collecting organic waste and processing it through anaerobic fermentation. As a result, biomethane is produced, which is then purified and brought to the parameters of natural gas. This biomethane is supplied to the energy installations of the plant, completely replacing traditional fossil fuels and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, the sugar production technology remains unchanged, which greatly facilitates the implementation of such ecological solutions in the industry.

“We are the first this year to use biomethane for sugar production. And today we officially have ‘green’ sugar, which probably does not exist in Europe.”

This was emphasized by the company’s CEO, Serhiy Kravchuk, during the Forbes Agro 2026 conference in Kyiv, which sparked significant interest among the event participants.

Impact on the Market and Export Prospects

In European Union countries, the reduction of fossil fuel use has been discussed for a long time; however, large sugar factories still largely depend on natural gas. The main obstacles to transitioning to biomethane remain technical and bureaucratic difficulties, particularly the lack of a unified biomethane registry in some EU countries. Meanwhile, Ukraine is actively implementing digital solutions in this area, providing an additional competitive advantage for domestic producers.

If the experience of “Hals Agro” is scaled up, other Ukrainian sugar producers will be able to expand their capabilities in the European market. After all, “green” products are usually valued higher, and buyers prefer them during procurement, paving the way for price increases and growing demand.

Currently, this is an important breakthrough both technologically and in terms of image for the entire industry. Its further development and expansion of low-carbon footprint sugar exports will be possible with the mass implementation of biomethane technologies and proper product certification.
