Ukraine has become the first country in the world to produce sugar using biomethane, marking an important step towards environmental safety and the decarbonization of the food industry. The company “Hals Agro” has officially confirmed this breakthrough by obtaining the relevant certifications for its products.

Production Technology: Sugar Without Harm to the Climate

Biomethane is a gas produced from the processing of organic waste, rather than extracted from the earth’s depths. This type of fuel has been used by “Hals Agro” instead of traditional natural gas at its sugar factory. The production process remains unchanged; however, it no longer harms the environment, allowing for the production of “green” sugar.

“We are the first to use biomethane for sugar production this year. And today we officially have “green” sugar, which probably does not exist in Europe.”

Benefits for Ukraine and Export Prospects

Unlike EU countries, where the transition of the sugar industry to biomethane is hindered by the lack of a unified registry and delays in implementing new technologies, Ukraine has already realized this process. Despite the state of war, the country has managed to outpace Europe in the digitization of the biomethane usage control system, which is a significant achievement in sustainable production.

This breakthrough opens new opportunities for Ukrainian producers. If such practices gain widespread adoption, domestic products could gain competitive advantages in the EU market, as environmentally friendly sugar is in high demand and commands a higher market value.

For now, this achievement is a source of national pride, but in the long term, it could significantly impact Ukraine’s position as a supplier of “green” food products to Europe.
