In the Ukrainian agricultural sector, the arrival of foreign workers is expected in the coming years, particularly from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. This was stated by the president of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association, Taras Bashtannyk, emphasizing the relevance of the issue of labor shortages in the industry.

Reasons for Attracting Migrants and Their Advantages

According to the expert, foreign migrants can earn even higher wages than local workers. The main reason for this is the increased labor productivity among migrants. Specialists believe that attracting workers from abroad is one of the key ways to address the labor shortage in agriculture.

“If we calculate the productivity of these individuals, such workers will not be more expensive than our workers… It is a fact that the productivity of labor among migrant workers is higher. They do not have distractions such as household responsibilities, family, and other circumstances. They come to work, and as a result, they work more hours, more days, and have higher productivity. Their goal is to earn money,” explained the president of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association.

Key Factors in Attracting Foreign Workers

Taras Bashtannyk notes that the choice of countries from which migrants will come will be influenced by the following factors:

  • which large companies will enter the Ukrainian market and which countries are their partners;
  • the effectiveness of consulates in issuing permits and visas for labor migrants.

The expert emphasizes that labor migration is a natural phenomenon for the labor market. Employers must provide decent conditions to retain or attract qualified workers. Among the possible incentives are considered preferential taxation, simplification of visa procedures, and other advantages.

Bashtannyk is convinced that even taking into account additional costs, the employment of foreigners will remain economically beneficial for agrarians. According to him, similar processes are occurring in other countries, particularly in Poland, and Ukraine’s competitiveness will depend on creating better conditions for labor migrants.
