In Ukraine, watermelon prices continue to decline due to increased supply
The improvement in weather conditions across most of Ukraine has allowed watermelon producers to resume mass harvesting operations. This has led to a significant increase in the supply of melons in the market, which, according to analysts, has become the main factor behind the current drop in watermelon prices.

Excess supply of large-sized watermelons affects prices
Farmers note that most of the harvested produce consists of large watermelons, for which demand remains low. Wholesale companies and retail chains are minimizing purchases of such fruits due to the slow pace of retail sales. Consequently, watermelon prices have now dropped to 5-15 UAH/kg (0.12-0.36 dollars per kilogram), which is approximately 31% lower than at the end of last week.
Producers explain this trend by the sharp increase in supply caused by the accelerated ripening of plants in the fields due to hot weather. However, the drought observed in the southern regions negatively affects the quality of watermelons, which also contributes to further price reductions.
Forecast: price decline will continue for large fruits
Despite the fact that watermelons currently cost, on average, 78% more than in mid-August 2024, experts do not expect a quick improvement in the market situation. According to industry specialists, only those producers who offer high-quality products will be able to raise prices, but their share in the market remains very limited.
“At the same time, prices for watermelons weighing over 5 kg will continue to fall, as farmers will try to accelerate sales to sell off existing volumes as quickly as possible.”
Thus, in the near future, the trend of declining watermelon prices, especially for large sizes, will persist due to excess supply and limited demand.
