Ukrainian Breeders Develop Early and Processing Potato Varieties

In Ukraine, the market offers over 240 potato varieties, a significant portion of which are developed by domestic scientists. About one-third of these varieties are the result of the work of Ukrainian breeders, and more than 75 varieties, or nearly 80% of domestic breeding, have been created at the Potato Institute of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences. This was reported by the director of the Institute, Mykola Furdyga.

Main Focus on Early and Processing Varieties
According to Mykola Furdyga, today the main attention of scientists is focused on developing early potato varieties, as well as varieties that are best suited for processing—specifically for the production of chips, potato products, and starch. Breeding work continues every year to meet the modern requirements of the agricultural sector, processing enterprises, and consumers.
“Potato breeding is not standing still—work is ongoing every year to improve varieties that meet the current demands of farmers, processing enterprises, and consumers. Currently, breeders are working on creating early varieties, varieties suitable for processing into potato products, and those with a high starch content,” noted Mykola Furdyga.
Advantages of New Potato Varieties
Early varieties allow farmers to harvest as soon as 55–65 days after emergence. This is especially important for farmers who aim to be the first to offer young potatoes to consumers.
For the processing industry, varieties with particularly stable biochemical characteristics are being developed. They have low levels of reducing sugars, good flesh structure, and meet increased requirements for tuber size and resistance to mechanical damage. Starch production requires the use of varieties with a dry matter content of over 20%.
