Ukrainian Potato Varieties Show Record Yields and Impress Polish Farmers

Ukrainian soils have one of the highest potentials for potato cultivation in Europe, and certain local varieties can yield up to 100 tons per hectare. This result is unattainable for farmers from Poland and Germany, believes Polish agrarian Piotr Kushel.

Field Day in Kozyn: Presentation of Record Varieties

At the agricultural event “Field Day,” held in the village of Kozyn in the Lutsk district, 79 varieties of seed potatoes of Ukrainian and European selection were presented. Farmers from Ukraine and Poland participated in the event. The organizer of the event is Volyn farmer Anatoliy Arshulik, who has been showcasing his achievements in potato farming and sharing experiences with colleagues for the tenth consecutive year.

“We have those varieties that have proven themselves well in the agro-climatic conditions of Volyn. If we see that a variety is disease-resistant and high-yielding, then we propagate it as seed material,” Arshulik said.

According to Anatoliy Arshulik, this year the highest yield was shown by the potato variety Larissa, which is grown on an area of 30 hectares.

Scientific Advice and Yield Forecasts

Agricultural science candidate Oleksandr Stupenko recommends adding boron to the soil before planting potatoes, and after planting, fertilizing the plants with phosphorus and nitrogen. The scientist notes that thanks to well-chosen varieties, the yield is extraordinarily high: from three to four bushes, one can collect more than a bucket of potatoes.

According to the regional department of agro-industrial development, in 2025, 80 thousand hectares will be planted with potatoes in Volyn. It is expected that the gross harvest will be around 1 million tons. At the same time, 99% of potato acreage belongs to villagers, while farm enterprises occupy a negligible share.
