The state railway company “Ukrzaliznytsia” has once again announced its intention to raise tariffs on freight transportation. This was reported by Valerii Tkachev, the deputy director of the company’s commercial department. After numerous critical remarks from businesses and experts regarding the company’s insufficient operational efficiency, which allegedly tries to cover its shortcomings through regulatory price increases, the management of “Ukrzaliznytsia” refrained from commenting.

Tkachev proposed a concept where the tariff increase should be viewed not as an indexation but as a mechanism that “does not raise the tariff, but indexes it.” At the same time, he emphasized that “everything has become more expensive, while tariffs have remained at the 2022 level.” According to the company representative, tariffs nearly doubled in 2022, and now they aim to increase them by 20-40%.

Ministry of Development Opposes Tariff Increases

While “Ukrzaliznytsia” plans to raise prices, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine stated that subsidizing the company, particularly in passenger transport, through freight transport contradicts European legislation. Ukraine is set to implement the relevant norms in the near future, complicating the possibility of increasing tariffs for freight transportation.
