She started her unusual garden with a few cuttings purchased at the market and seedlings gifted by friends from abroad. Today, her estate has transformed into a true tropical oasis, where exotic crops thrive both in greenhouses and in open ground.
Features of Fig Cultivation
A special pride of the farm is the fig, with the oldest bushes being about five years old. Alona’s collection includes 5-6 varieties, one of which has proven particularly well adapted to the local climate. Last year, 45 bushes were planted in open ground, which successfully survived the winter thanks to a special agro-fabric covering technique.
“The fig produces two harvests. It is quite an undemanding plant; the only issue is frost. It grows almost independently.”
Diversity of Citrus and Other Exotic Crops
The estate is also famous for its diverse citrus crops. Here, three varieties of lemons, two varieties of mandarins, oranges, kumquats, limequats, and citrons are grown. Additionally, pomegranates, passion fruits, and young papayas are also bearing fruit successfully.
To ensure successful citrus cultivation, the owner has created special conditions. In summer, the plants are outdoors under a shading net, and in winter, they are moved to a semi-basement room with additional lighting, where temperatures are maintained between 10 and 15 degrees.
Alona Raka’s experience demonstrates that with proper care and the use of modern agricultural technologies, growing tropical fruits in Ukraine can be a successful and profitable direction for agriculture.
