Wheat Prices in Ukraine Rise Amid Limited Supplies and Currency Fluctuations
The Ukrainian wheat market is experiencing a significant increase in prices due to the suspension of truck deliveries to ports caused by severe frosts. Traders are forced to raise purchase prices to stimulate market activity; however, the expected easing of frosts at the end of the week may lead to an increase in grain supply.

Impact of Currency Fluctuations and Global Exchange Dynamics
The rise in the dollar exchange rate on the interbank market has led to an increase in export purchase prices for wheat in Ukraine by 50–100 UAH/ton over the week. The price of food wheat currently stands at 10,100–10,400 UAH/ton, or $208–214/ton, while feed wheat is priced at 9,800–10,100 UAH/ton, or $204–206/ton, with delivery to Black Sea ports.
Positive dynamics have also been observed in global exchanges for March wheat futures:
- SRW wheat in Chicago — up 1.3% to $190.3/ton,
- HRW wheat in Kansas City — up 0.3% to $193.7/ton,
- wheat on Euronext in Paris — up 1% to €191.25/ton ($222.7/ton).
At the same time, HRS wheat futures in Minneapolis decreased by 0.3% to $207.6/ton.
Global Demand Factors and Saudi Arabia’s Purchases
Prices are influenced by speculative sales related to forecasts of cooling in the U.S. at the end of the week following a period of relatively warm weather, which has led to a reduction in snow cover and increased risks for winter crops.
“Yesterday was a holiday in the U.S. for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so we expect speculative price increases to continue until the end of the week, but they will be limited by reduced demand from importers.”
The Saudi Arabian General Authority for Food Security (GFSA) held a tender on January 16 for the purchase of 597,000 tons of hard milling wheat with 12.5% protein for delivery in May–July. As a result, 907,000 tons of wheat of Russian, Black Sea, and European origin were purchased for delivery to the ports of Jeddah (300,000 tons), Dammam (127,000 tons), Yanbu (425,000 tons), and Jizan (55,000 tons) at an average price of $260.88/ton C&F. In comparison, in February 2025, Saudi Arabia purchased wheat at a price of $276.37/ton C&F.
