Wheat Production in the United Kingdom Increased Due to Expanded Planting
The UK Department for Agriculture and Environment has released data indicating that this year’s wheat harvest has increased by 7.3%, reaching 11.96 million tons. The main factor behind this growth was the expansion of planting areas, which helped to offset a slight decrease in crop yield.

Trends in Grain Production
The agency reported that the area planted with wheat increased by 9.1%, reaching 1.7 million hectares. Meanwhile, the average wheat yield decreased by 1.7%, to 7.2 tons per hectare. As for barley, its total production fell to 6.37 million tons, which is 10% less compared to last year. Spring barley showed a significant decline of 16%, down to 3.89 million tons, while winter barley demonstrated a slight increase of 1.2%, totaling 2.47 million tons.
Recovery of Rapeseed Production
The department also noted a gradual recovery in rapeseed production: this year’s harvest of this crop increased by 7%, amounting to 893 thousand tons. However, despite the positive trend, overall rapeseed figures remain significantly lower than the peak levels of previous years.
“For comparison, in 2011, British farmers harvested a record 2.76 million tons of rapeseed. However, the crop lost popularity due to widespread damage from flea beetles following the ban on several insecticides aimed at protecting bee populations.”
