Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, 40,700 square kilometers of territory have been returned to active use. Of this area, 15.1 thousand hectares consist of agricultural land that has been cleared under the state program “Humanitarian Demining.” This was reported by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Svyrydenko.

Ukraine remains the most mine-contaminated country in the world

“On the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, we state: Ukraine remains the most contaminated country in the world with explosive remnants of war — over 130,000 km² of territory is potentially dangerous. The most affected regions are Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Donetsk,” the statement on the Government Portal reads.

At the same time, the government emphasizes new approaches to demining. Ukrainian specialists are implementing modern technologies and utilizing domestically produced robotic complexes, which allows for the optimization and reduction of demining costs. In 2026, the government plans to return approximately 10,000 hectares, primarily agricultural land, back to use. For the first time, the GRIT prioritization system has been used to determine the order of demining.

Strengthening the market for demining operators and supporting farmers

According to Yulia Svyrydenko, the market for demining operators in Ukraine is rapidly developing. Their number has increased from 74 to 134 due to the active participation of the private sector alongside the State Emergency Service and the State Special Transport Service.

A compensation program for the cost of demining is available for individuals and self-employed farmers, with applications being submitted through the State Agricultural Register.

Additionally, the “Soul of Soil” campaign is being implemented in Ukraine, which promotes products grown on demined territories and supports humanitarian demining.
