Currants are considered an undemanding shrub; however, using the wrong fertilizers can lead to serious problems, such as yellowing leaves, weak flowering, and small berries.

Negative Impact of Fresh Manure

Fresh manure is often used to stimulate growth, but it can damage the root system due to excess ammonia. This leads to vigorous leaf growth without the formation of flower buds. Additionally, fresh manure attracts pests, particularly the cabbage fly.

Other Dangerous Fertilizers

Potassium chloride can also negatively affect the plant. It blocks the absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus, causing leaf edge burn and weakening the plant’s immunity. As a result, the berries become small and sour.

Urea, applied in late spring, is important for awakening the buds; however, later it only stimulates shoot growth, not berry formation.

Furthermore, nitroammophos and other complex fertilizers with high nitrogen content can cause chemical burns to the root system if used in excessive amounts. Symptoms include twisted leaves, reddening of veins, and dropping of buds.

Fertilizing with ash along with nitrogen fertilizers can also be dangerous, as ash alters soil acidity, leading to ammonia evaporation and nutrient deficiency for the plant.
