Advantages of Autumn Cabbage Planting

Planting cabbage for the winter has several advantages. Firstly, spring seedlings appear faster, and the plants develop stronger stems that are more resistant to pests. Secondly, winter planting helps avoid many spring worries, as the plants adapt to temperature changes and are less susceptible to diseases.

For this agricultural technique, it is advisable to choose medium- or late-ripening cabbage varieties that tolerate cold and winter well.

Recommended Varieties for Winter Planting

Agronomists highlight two varieties that are particularly resilient to frost.

  • “Kharkiv Winter” — a domestic variety characterized by high yield and hardiness. Heads can weigh up to 5 kg, transport well, and can be stored for up to 7 months without losing their taste and market appearance.
  • “Amager 611” — a late-ripening variety that is ideal for pickling and long-term storage. The growing season lasts up to 148 days, but it may be longer in unfavorable weather conditions. Heads weigh up to 4 kg. It is important to note that this variety has lower resistance to fusarium and bacterial diseases. With proper storage, the vegetable retains its properties for up to 3 months.

“Kharkiv Winter” is of Ukrainian origin. It is renowned for its high yield and is undemanding in terms of growing conditions. Cabbage heads typically weigh up to 5 kilograms. The fruits transport well and can be stored for up to 7 months without spoiling their appearance and taste.

For successful autumn planting, it is necessary to prepare the bed in advance: a month before sowing, apply phosphorus-potassium fertilizers and organic matter. Seeds are recommended to be sown in dry soil at a temperature of around 0°C. The furrows should be filled with a mixture of soil, peat, and sand in a ratio of 1:2:1, after which they are covered with agro-fabric for protection against frost.
