Such planting material has undamaged and non-dried roots, which significantly increases the chances of the tree successfully adapting to its new location.

“But it is important to know that seedlings should be purchased with closed roots, both domestically and abroad, which are undamaged and not dried out. Otherwise, if the roots are dry, these trees will not survive in late autumn. Therefore, it is undesirable to plant such seedlings. In this case, it is better to temporarily bury them at an angle. In general, the later the planting, the worse it is for the tree,” explains breeder Mykola Zavalny.

It is very important to avoid purchasing seedlings with scorched leaves, as the leaves take energy from the plant and can significantly reduce its viability. If the seedling’s roots are dried out, it is better to postpone planting until spring or temporarily bury the plant at an angle to preserve its viability.

Which Trees Adapt Best in Autumn

Among fruit trees recommended for autumn planting, frost-resistant varieties of apples and pears are primarily suggested. Apple trees are known for their hardiness and ability to root quickly, as well as for producing abundant yields. Pears also adapt well to autumn planting and actively develop by spring.

The list of trees recommended for autumn planting includes plums, mulberries, cherries, and apricots. Plums respond particularly well to cool weather, and their fruits will become a true decoration of the garden. Cherries root quickly in autumn, allowing for the first juicy berries to be harvested by spring.

Regarding stone fruits, there is an opinion that autumn is not always favorable for them; however, they can still be planted in September. For later planting, it is better to choose frost-resistant varieties of plums, apricots, and cherries, as they have a higher chance of successful adaptation to winter.

Among berry bushes, blackcurrants, raspberries, gooseberries, and black chokeberries are best suited for autumn planting. Autumn is also suitable for transplanting coniferous plants and thuja – all these crops tolerate autumn transplanting well.

It is worth remembering that if autumn drought persists and soil moisture is low, it is better to postpone planting until spring. Otherwise, with sufficient moisture and a relatively mild winter, the trees have every chance of thriving and will delight you with their first harvest in just a few years.
