In the first decade of January 2026, the agro-meteorological conditions for the wintering of winter crops in the Kyiv region were assessed as satisfactory. The winter crops were in a state of winter dormancy, which contributed to their viability.

Snow Cover and Temperature Regime

As of the end of the first decade of January, fields with winter crop sowings were covered with snow, with a thickness ranging from 6 to 26 centimeters. This provided additional protection for the plants against low temperatures.

The minimum soil temperature at the depth of the tillering node of winter crops was recorded at levels from -1 to -3°C. These figures significantly exceed the critical frost limits, even for poorly developed plants.

“The calculated critical freezing temperature for well-developed winter wheat of medium frost resistance as of January 10 in the region was -16 to -18°C”.

Recommendations for Monitoring the Condition of Winter Crops

Experts recommend additionally sampling plants to assess their viability after sharp weather changes, such as deep thaws or severe frosts. This should be done not only during the generally accepted periods (January 25, February 23, and March 10) but also after atypical temperature fluctuations.

Particular attention should be paid to the dynamics of carbohydrate consumption in the plants, the condition of the growing points, and the temperature regime at the depth of the tillering nodes. This approach will allow for the timely identification of potential risks for winter crops and ensure their successful wintering.
