Humanitarian Support for Various Regions of the World

The executive body of the European Union has reported that currently, 239 million people worldwide are in need of humanitarian assistance, while leading donors are reducing their funding. According to the distribution, the largest amounts will be allocated to the following regions:

  • €557 million – for countries in West and Central Africa, including the Sahel, Lake Chad basin, northwestern Nigeria, southern parts of the continent, the Great Lakes region, and the Greater Horn of Africa;
  • €448 million – for countries in the Middle East. Assistance will be provided, in particular, to the Gaza Strip following the establishment of a fragile ceasefire, as well as to Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon;
  • €126 million – for humanitarian needs in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran;
  • €95 million – to support Central and South America and Caribbean countries, where a humanitarian crisis continues due to armed conflicts, violence, political instability, acute inequality, and environmental challenges;
  • €73 million – for assistance to Southeast Asia and Pacific Island countries, particularly due to the crisis in Myanmar and its impact on Bangladesh;
  • €14.6 million – for North Africa, which remains vulnerable to political, economic, and social challenges.

Emergency Reserve Fund

In addition to the main expenditures, the European Commission is keeping €415 million in reserve. These funds may be used in the event of unexpected emergencies anywhere in the world, as well as to support humanitarian aid supply chains.

“EU humanitarian aid provides vital assistance where it is most needed: emergency food and shelter, critical medical assistance, protection for the most vulnerable populations, and support for children’s education in crisis zones,” the press service clarifies.

Earlier, EU leaders approved a decision to allocate €90 billion to Ukraine over two years in the form of a loan backed by the EU budget. The loan will be divided into €30 billion for budget support and €60 billion for military purposes.
